Biography
I live in rural Boone County in the state of, Indiana. On 10 acres we call Windy Hill Farm. We have a myriad of animals (they somehow come in two’s for us). Harmony my paint mare (whom the whole journey started with) Raven my Welsh Cobb/POA (brat) mare. Merlin and Belladonna the resident barn cats and Beauregard de Beauceron and Bock the Noble Newfoundland, the mighty protectors of the humans and animals of the land.
In 2001, I began a Quest, trying to find more natural ways to take care of my horses , Harmony and Clover (Clover, my Arabian mare , is no longer with us ,she crossed the Rainbow Bridge 2 years ago). I was especially concerned about Harmony’s hooves. They cracked, chipped and splintered no matter what my farrier did, even in the winter time with the pasture trim. It just seemed to me that there was something not right about this and I really started to cruise the internet to find some answers. In my search I found Jaime Jackson and Pete Ramey. They both had written books and I bought and read them both.
I started trimming my own horses and attended a hoof trimming clinic on which we practiced on cadaver hooves and some live horses. The further along I journeyed the more books I studied and the more resources I found for holistic care. I could not believe the difference in their behavior, and gaits as well as the hoof’s, they no longer split, chipped and or cracked. The proof was in the pudding for me. I was hooked. My horses would never again have another shoe placed on their hoof’s they will have 24/7 turn out (with some shelter of course) continuous movement and free choice grass hay and no sweet feed. This became my mantra.
A couple of years after I started trimming Pete Ramey came to Clinton Anderson’s place in Ohio (at the time) so off I went to the weekend long clinic and this really helped to put a lot of things into perspective for me, after two years of trimming my own horses I decided to further my education and pursue certification through the AANHCP organization.
Along this part of my journey I had the pleasure of attending one of Jaime Jackson’s cluster clinics, in which his presentation of the wild horse hoof model enlightened me all the more.
I have also met, studied and mentored with a group of wonderful individuals who have practiced the Mustang Roll and applied the fundamentals of natural horse keeping. They have developed their Hoof Care practices and provide care for hundreds of strong barefoot horses. Some of these have had laminitis, navicular, wry foot and /or founder, and some that just needed to get out of their “horseshoes” and literally let their hooves breathe.
Here I am 7 years later wanting to share this wonderful and very practical approach to equine husbandry with all who want to travel down the barefoot road. To let the horse be as nature intended them to be.
